Darien Police say they responded to HSBC Bank (151 Post Road) on Thursday, April 11 around 1:30 p.m. on the report of a male attempting to withdraw money from an account which an employee believed did not belong to him.

Police say they were provided with a description of the suspect and escorted him outside for questioning. The man allegedly identified himself as William Evans.

After further questioning, the man correctly identified himself as Colin Smith, 50, of Waterbury, according to police.

Smith allegedly told officers that he had come to the bank to make a withdrawal. Police say a bank employee turned over several items that Smith had provided them when the transaction was attempted, including a falsified New Jersey driver’s license, bank cards and a withdrawal slip made out for $6,200, all of which bore the name “William Evans.”

Smith was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Second-degree identity theft
  • Criminal impersonation
  • Third-degree criminal attempted larceny
  • First-degree forgery
  • Interfering with an investigation

Smith was held on $25,000 bond before a State Bail Commissioner changed the bond to a written promise to appear. Smith was released and is scheduled to return to court on Monday, April 22.
