A Connecticut man has been apprehended after jumping out of a car on a busy highway to steal a truck and ramming two state police cruisers before fleeing.

The incident took place in New Haven County on I-84 in Southbury around 8 a.m. on Thursday, June 16.

According to the state police, Robert Brown got out of a vehicle that was traveling westbound on I-84 near Exit 13 in Southbury and ran across the highway to the eastbound side.

Brown, of Wolcott, then stole a construction worker's truck and drove eastbound intentionally ramming two occupied state police cruisers parked in the median, the state police said.

A foot pursuit ensued for about 300 yards before caught up with Brown and a "violent struggle" took place, police added.

During the struggle, Brown attempted to take one of the trooper's firearms from his holster, police said.

Passing motorists stopped to help the troopers and a taser was used to take him into custody, they added.

Two troopers were transported to an area hospital for minor injuries. The civilians who stopped and helped were not injured, police said.

Brown was transported to a separate hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

When released, he was arrested and charged with:

  • Reckless driving
  • Larceny
  • Interfering with officer/resisting
  • Assault on public safety officer
  • Criminal possession of a weapon
  • Criminal attempt at assault
  • Assault
  • Assault with a motor vehicle
  • Reckless endangerment

He is being held on a $1 million court-set bond.
