Margaret C. Sauerhoff, 86, Longtime New Canaan Resident, Library Aide

NEW CANAAN, Conn. - Margaret C. Sauerhoff of New Canaan died Wednesday, July 30. She was 86.

Sauerhoff was born Aug. 12, 1927, in Columbus, Ohio, to the Rev. Charles Melvin and Mary Lovell Coulter. She worked as the director of religious education at Emory Methodist Church. Before moving to New Canaan, she and her husband lived in Silver Spring and then Bethesda, Md. She had resided in New Canaan since 1966.

She retired in 1996 after 15 years as the librarian at the Miller Driscoll School in Wilton. Before that, she was the library aide at East Elementary School in New Canaan for 10 years. She graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1949 and earned a master of library science degree from Southern Connecticut State College in 1978. For the past 48 years, she was a member of the United Methodist Church in New Canaan. She was active in the New Canaan Town Players.

Sauerhoff is survived by her children, John (Barbara) Sauerhoff, of New Canaan, Victor (Debbe) Sauerhoff of Katonah, N.Y., David (Nancy) Sauerhoff, of St. Louis, Mo., Peggy Ann Sauerhoff (Porter Barber), of Grahamsville, N.Y., and Elizabeth (Robin) McCready, of Stratford; and nine grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents; husband, John E. Sauerhoff Jr. (Jack); and sister, Mary Jo Brower.

A service in Sauerhoff’s memory will be held at the United Methodist Church of New Canaan when it reopens after the completion of its renovations in the fall.
