Evelyn Blanche Carbonell, 90, Of New Canaan

NEW CANAAN, Conn. - Evelyn Blanche (Porges) Carbonell of Coconut Grove, Fla., and New Canaan, died Sunday, Sept. 21. She was 90.

Carbonell was born July 10, 1924, and raised in New York City. She obtained undergraduate and master’s degrees from the City College of New York. After college, she worked as a speech specialist, audiologist, and English as a Second Language teacher at Ohio University and Purdue University.

After her marriage, she lived in San Salvador with her husband. Upon their return to the United States, they settled in Stamford. She resumed her teaching career and taught ESL to adults in night classes at Rice School and later taught French to middle school students at Turn of River School.

Carbonell is survived by her children, Armando (Jean Revell) Carbonell of West Barnstable and Cambridge, Mass., Robert (Patricia Fairchild) Carbonell of Chapel Hill, N.C., Margaret Carbonell Smith (Greg) of Tualatin, Ore., John and Cheryl (Bloom) Carbonell of Norwalk and Juliet (Carbonell) Marcus (Bo) of New Canaan; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Robert J. Carbonell; brother, John Porges; and sisters, Juliet Tieger and Lillian Porges.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Congregational Church of New Canaan on 23 Park St.
