Elaine Woolworth, 84, Of New Canaan

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Elaine Antonia Fanoni Woolworth, a longtime New Canaan resident, died Tuesday, Oct. 6 at Stamford Hospital. She was 84.

Woolworth was born June 21, 1931, in New York City, to Vincenzo and Mae Shields Fanoni, growing up near Washington Square in Greenwich Village.

She became a nationally competitive amateur golfer while attending the Brearley School, winning the Eastern Women's Amateur at Wingfoot and reaching the quarterfinals of the National Amateur at Weeburn Country Club.

Woolworth went on to work at the New Canaan Country School, eventually serving on the school's board of trustees, as well as on the board of the school's Horizons program for low-income students.

She also launched a successful business, Tessera, with friend Sharon Forrelli while continuing to volunteer.

Woolworth was predeceased by her ex-husband Norman S. Woolworth.

She is survived by four sons, Norman J. Woolworth and his wife Lori of Charlottesville, Va, Eric Woolworth and his wife Jocelyn of Miami, Fla., Timothy Woolworth and his wife Christine of Falmouth, Maine, and Stephen Woolworth and his wife Sherri of Tacoma, Wash., sister Teresa Hurd of Walnut Grove, Calif. and nine grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at St Matthews Church, 216 Scribner Ave., Norwalk.

Interment will be private.
