Cornelius O’Brien, 78, Of New Canaan, Patent Counsel, Union Carbide/Praxair

NEW CANAAN, Conn. - Cornelius (Neil) O’Brien, a New Canaan resident, died Sunday, Sept. 7. He was 78.

O’Brien was born April 22, 1936, in New York City, to Daniel and Nora Nagle O’Brien. After attending Cardinal Hayes High School, he served in the Honor Guard of the Armed Services in Washington, D.C. He received an electrical engineering degree from City College of New York, a law degree from New York Law School and a Master of Laws from New York University Law School. His was a patent counsel for Union Carbide/Praxair for nearly three decades. He was a parishioner of St. Aloysius Parish for over 34 years  He was a member of the New Canaan Senior Men’s Club.

O’Brien is survived by his wife, Dorothy Kelleher O’Brien; daughters, Margaret M. O’Brien (Bryan Murtagh) of Rye, N.Y., Patricia A. White (Jim) of Portola Valley, Calif., Mary T. Brunner (Tom) of New Canaan; son, Thomas D. O’Brien (Karen) of Mill Valley, Calif.; sister, Eileen Kennedy of Edgewater, Fla.; and 11 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, John, Bobby and Patrick; and sisters, Shelia and Mae.

Calling hours are Thursday, Sept. 11, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main St., New Canaan. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 12, in St. Aloysius Church, Cherry St., New Canaan.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Fairfield County Chapter of JDRF or the LuMind Foundation for Down Syndrome Research.
