What's On Your Mind, New Canaan?

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – The search for a new home, changes to the downtown shopping area and where to find the right pair of dance shoes were some of the things on the minds of people in New Canaan when we spoke with them on Thursday afternoon.

Patty Allen was walking in Morse Court on Thursday as she began searching for a home in town. Allen has been living in Old Greenwich for several years after taking a job in the area, but she’s ready to settle into something more permanent.  “It’s a beautiful, quaint New England town,” she said, holding maps and other information about New Canaan. “It’s a little hot today, but there’s plenty of air conditioned shops to hop into.”

The heat was also noticed by Matt Prush, 18, as he headed back to work at New Balance New Canaan. “It’s hot, but it’s not so bad,” he said. When it gets really warm, he’s anxious to get to the beach. But on Thursday, he resorted to a cold drink to keep cool.

Carole Lipton, a town resident since 1989, lamented the lack of family-oriented restaurants in the downtown area. “Everything is ‘foo-foo.’ Everything is fancy now,” she said. “I’d like something more family-friendly.”

Dave Miller, 60, of Darien also took note of the changes in Downtown New Canaan over the years. Miller said he’s concerned about the loss of so many smaller shops and the influx of corporate stores. “I’d like to see the mom and pop stores be able to make a go of it,” noting that there are probably a number of reasons some older shops have closed their doors. “It makes you feel a little sad and pensive.”

Erika Lowman, 13, of Darien had her mind focused on finding the right pair of dance shoes as she begins learning Irish dance. “I have a friend who does it. I saw it and it just seems pretty cool,” she said.
