NEW CANAAN, Conn. – The New Canaan YMCA will be set up as an overnight shelter Wednesday as town emergency officials prepare for colder nights and continued power outages caused by Hurricane Sandy.
Temperatures will fall into the low 50s in the evening, Emergency Management Director Mike Handler said Wednesday morning. New Canaan had closed the shelter at Lapham Community Center in Wavney Park on Tuesday due to a lack of users.
As of 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, 5,948 Connecticut Light & Power customers in New Canaan were without power. That number represents 71 percent of the utility’s customers in town. It may take five to 10 days for the town to have power fully restored, First Selectman Rob Mallozzi III said Tuesday.
As in the power outages caused by Hurricane Irene and the October 2011 snowstorm, the YMCA had been available to residents for showers and will be open from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
