New Canaan 'Pop-Up Park' Gets Positive Reviews

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – If comments from visitors to downtown New Canaan last weekend are any indication, the “pop-up park” on South Avenue may be here to stay.

Town residents and others who dropped in on the new flex space liked what they saw, according to New Canaan Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tucker Murphy.

The chamber set up tables and chairs in the space, between Morse Court and Elm Street, and singer EJ Couloucoundis provided music Saturday. The space was open from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon for residents to enjoy.

Comments collected by Murphy included “Absolutely love! Please keep it up all summer,” “The best thing to happen in town in a long time,” and “I want this all the time. This street is useless, anyway.”

Murphy said she’s pleased with the reaction. “Several people seemed happy to have a place to sit down,” she said, noting that some husbands preferred to relax while their wives went shopping.

Only one negative comment came from a visitor who complained about traffic being blocked in the downtown area, she said. But for all of the good words, Murphy said she is certain other people complained.

The pop-up park will be popping up again. The flex space will be set up Saturday afternoon in conjunction with the annual Village Fair and Sidewalk Sale, expected to bring thousands of visitors to the downtown area.

Murphy said she hopes to have the flex space open twice more in August, once more in September and once in October. She must receive approvals from the New Canaan Police Commission on a case-by-case basis.
