New Canaan Police Dog Taking Medical Retirement

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – A degenerative spine condition is forcing New Canaan Police dog Zira is retire after two years on the job.

Zira’s handler, Officer Michael McFadden, noticed that she was having difficulty walking, Sgt. Carol Ogrinc said Monday. Zira was examined by a specialist and diagnosed with the spine problem, which needs immediate surgery. Ogrinc said a donor is paying for the operation. While Zira is expected to make a full recovery, she will no longer be able to work as a police dog. She will be placed in a pre-screened adoptive home for her retirement.

New Canaan Police had a four-year warranty on Zira that requires her importer to provide a new dog and training at no cost, Ogrinc said. Once a dog is selected, McFadden will begin training with his new partner.

Zira officially joined the New Canaan Police in November 2010.
