New Canaan Enacts Noon Curfew As Hurricane Sandy Nears

Updated at 10:20 a.m. NEW CANAAN, Conn. – New Canaan emergency officials will enact a noon curfew Monday as winds from Hurricane Sandy increase.

Emergency Management Director Mike Handler told residents Monday morning that people should stay indoors unless it’s necessary to evacuate. Wind gusts were measured at 25 to 35 mph at about 8:30 a.m. and expected to increase to 75 mph as the day goes on. The arrival of the hurricane has already forced New Canaan Schools to close for Monday and Tuesday. The New Canaan Library and New Canaan YMCA are also closed.

The Bank of New Canaan announced that it will close at 11:30 a.m. and remain closed through Tuesday.

Walter Stewart's Market will also close at noon today, according to the New Canaan's emergency mangement office.
