Updated at 11:30 a.m. NEW CANAAN, Conn. – New Canaan residents were getting a few more things from local stores Monday morning before Hurricane Sandy's winds pick up more.
Carl Franco, co-owner of Franco’s Wine Merchants, said his shop had had a few costumers Monday morning to get water, ice and, yes, even a bottle of wine as they hunker down and brace for Sandy’s impact.
“I guess they know that a corkscrew works with or without electricity,” he said.
Elm Street “is still active,” Franco said.
“I was up at CVS and it’s packed. The prescription line was huge.”
Franco said his shop will stay open until the weather deteriorates. Several downtown mainstays will close early, including Walter Stewart’s Market, which will close at noon.
The New Canaan Diner will close at noon, while New Canaan Pizza is open until 1 p.m. and Subway is open until 4 p.m. All other places we called are closed or closing, according to the New Canaan Office of Emergency Management.
