Williams was suspended on Feb. 10 for six months without pay after making a statement days earlier on the news clarifying that he "incorrectly remembered details in a 2003 reporting mission to Iraq."
Further reports have turned up 11 instances where Williams embellished the truth.
NBC and Williams have been negotiating his job future for weeks, according to CNN Money.
Williams could end up leaving NBC with a financial settlement, but another recent possibility would create a new role for him at the network, CNN Money said.
NBC News Chairman Andy Lack, is trying to find a way to keep Williams, CNN Money quotes a source as saying.
Williams and "NBC Nightly News" enjoyed the highest ratings of the dinner-time news broadcasts before his suspension. Since Williams' suspension, Lester Holt has been anchor of the show and continues to post high ratings.
