Man Charged in New Canaan in Card-Skimming Probe

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – A New York man accused of trying to put a bank card-skimming device on a Chase Bank ATM was arrested Saturday by New Canaan police.

Adrian Abagiu, 30, of the Bronx, is charged with two counts each of second-degree attempted criminal larceny, third-degree criminal attempted identity theft, criminal possession of access device to obtain personal identifying information and second-degree forgery. He also was charged with one count of interfering with an officer.

Officers were alerted May 10 by Chase Bank investigators that a man was seen on video allegedly attempting to install a skimming device on an automated teller machine at a bank, police said. Investigators said they saw the same man allegedly trying to install or “test fit” a skimming device on the same machine. Police had the bank, located on Main Street, put under surveillance Saturday.

Abagiu was seen at 9:30 p.m. Saturday entering the bank’s vestibule, police said. He was stopped as he attempted to leave the bank. Police said they found an ATM-skimming device in Abagiu’s jacket pocket upon searching him.

Officers from the Connecticut Financial Crimes Task Force and State Police assisted New Canaan police in the investigation.

Abagiu was ordered held on $250,000 bond and was set to be arraigned Monday in Norwalk Superior Court.
