Greenwich Police say they responded to 197 Greenwich Avenue on the report of a bank fraud incident on Thursday, April 4 around 12:30 p.m.

Officers say they located a suspect in the lobby of the building that matched the description provided by the reporting party.

The suspect was discovered to be in possession of a fraudulent New York State driver’s license, personal identifying information of another person whom he was impersonating and a fraudulent credit card, according to police. He had also allegedly tried to withdraw $5,000 from an account, police say.

Officers say they also discovered a Samsung Galaxy S10E in the suspect’s possession, which was allegedly purchased earlier this month at T-Mobile in Stamford using personal information from the same subject he was impersonating at the bank.

Officers say they determined that a co-conspirator dropped Smith off and assisted with the crime. After obtaining a description, the second subject was located on foot a short distance away from the bank, police say. The second suspect was confirmed and identified as Michael Smith, 35, of the Bronx.

Smith was determined to be in possession of two more fraudulent IDs and three additional fraudulent credit cards, according to police.

Smith was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Third-degree larceny/conspiracy to commit
  • Credit card theft
  • Third-degree identity theft
  • Second-degree forgery

Smith was released after posting $25,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Stamford Superior Court on Friday, April 19.
