NEW CANAAN, Conn. A Maltese dog named Bertie has been making people in New Canaan smile for years.
People have seen the tiny white pet who has often brought a smile to their faces, especially residents at the Waveny Care Center, where he has been an unofficial therapy dog for more than 12 years.
Everybody knows Bertie, says his owner, Sheila McMann, who lives on Oenoke Ridge. She jokes that people only know her as Berties mother.
So its no surprise that Bertie was given the honor of getting dog tag No. 1 as part of the towns annual Make Your Beagle Legal campaign, an effort to get animals licensed as mandated by the state.
Town Clerk Claudia Weber said about 1,000 animals have licensed their pets since the start of the month. While some renew the licenses by mail, a few people have ventured to town hall with their pets on leashes. Dogs that do come by get a hug from the office staff and a dog biscuit.
Proper licensing is needed for any dog who wants to play at the Spencers Run dog park in Waveny Park. The registration deadline is July 1. The fee is $8 for any animal that has been spayed or neutered and $19 if they are not spayed or neutered. Any licensing done after July 1 will include a $1 late fee.
