Harris, New Canaan Lacrosse Settle Lawsuit

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Dr. Claudia Harris, a youth lacrosse coach who claimed she was fired fighting for fairness, has reached a settlement with the New Canaan Lacrosse Association.

Harris and the youth lacrosse group announced Wednesday that the two sides had settled the civil lawsuit that Harris filed last year in Stamford Superior Court. Terms of the deal were not disclosed in a joint statement, but Harris will now serve on the group’s newly created grievance committee.

The Harrises filed suit last year with Claudia Harris claiming that association's board did not provide equal opportunities for girls and ignored her concerns about bullying while forcing her out in the summer of 2010. The lacrosse association and several board members were named as defendants.

“Dr. Claudia Harris has been a valuable contributor and member of the youth lacrosse community in New Canaan" said New Canaan Lacrosse President Garth Appelt in the Wednesday statement. "As we move forward our views are 100 percent aligned with regards to the issues of gender equality, safety and fairness in New Canaan Lacrosse and in youth sports in general. With the dispute behind us we can all focus on the players and making the upcoming season a success.”

In the statment, Harris, a psychiatrist, said that she and her husband, Roger, will continue supporting the youth lacrosse group, saying that the association “is in the vanguard of putting these statistics into programmatic changes as well as taking steps to actively seek out the participation of more women in their leadership ranks in proportion to the large number of girls who now play.”

“The positive influence of female role models for girls who play sports is clear, and hopefully, more and more women will consider getting involved,” Harris said.
