Chamber: New Canaan Sidewalk Sale A Success

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Saturday in New Canaan could not have gone much better.

That’s the word from Tucker Murphy, executive director of the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce, after last weekend’s Village Fair and Sidewalk Sale, the annual shopping and summer festival. This year’s edition brought several thousand people to the downtown shopping district looking for good deals.

“It was great,” said Murphy, who helped organize the 47th annual sale. She worried a little about thunderstorms that came to town early Saturday morning, but the rain held off for the rest of the day.

“We had really great weather," she said. "While it was hot, we had a really nice day.”

The sales also went well, she said, as more than 150 vendors – including many downtown stores – set up shop outdoors to get the attention of would-be customers. Portions of Elm, Main and Forest streets were closed to vehicle traffic, allowing visitors plenty of space to walk around and find deals.

Murphy said the stores did well even though other area towns were also having sidewalk sale events.

“Lots of vendors and stores told us they came close to all-time high records or they did get records in terms of sales,” she said.

Visitors were treated to music from the School of Rock and the New Canaan Town Band and kids played at an Olympic-themed obstacle course.

“We feel like we had good traffic flow,” Murphy said. “The merchants had really great stuff to sell. At the end of that day, that’s what makes or breaks a vendor.”

The New Canaan Chamber’s next big event will be the second annual Restaurant Week, beginning on Aug. 24.
