NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- In 2013, the cases moved forward in two fatal car accidents in New Canaan, the high school football team won a state title and the town lost a talented young hockey player who was killed in a crash in Virginia.

Town resident Kate Regan pleaded guilty in November to negligent homicide with a motor vehicle and evading responsibility for a fatal hit-and-run accident in August 2010. Sentenced to five years of probation and 300 hours of community service, Regan was spared prison time because the family of her elderly victim asked for leniency so her young children would not suffer. She hit Krishna Jayaraman, 82, in front of his Oenoke Road home.

Michael M. Savage, 39, was facing charges after a nearly two-year investigation of a high-speed car crash that resulted in the death of his 74-year-old father.

The death of Kelsey Durkin, 21, a college student who was killed in a car crash in Virginia in December, stunned her former teammates on the New Canaan High School girls ice hockey team.

Mary Margaret Farren of New Canaan was awarded $28.6 million in damages in a civil lawsuit after being severely beaten by her husband, J. Michael Farren, a former White House deputy counsel for President George W. Bush.

The football team at New Canaan High School had a nearly perfect season. It won the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship and went on to win the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference state Class L title by rolling past Darien, 44-12. The only loss on the season was to Darien in the annual Thanksgiving match-up between the two archrivals.

Cole Harris, a senior and the anchor on the Rams' defense, was named as the MSG Varsity Player of the Year in Connecticut. He recorded 170 tackles, three interceptions, seven caused fumbles and three fumble recoveries. He also scored five touchdowns.

Nine-year-old John Breitfelder dined with First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House in the summer after his Quinoa Risotto with Shrimp and Kale recipe was picked as a winner in the the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge.

Police Lt. Frederic Pickering was suspended for 10 days after an internal investigation of his involvement while he was off-duty in a physical altercation at the Tequila Mockingbird Restaurant in February.

In August, New Canaan became the first town since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings to hold an "active shooter drill," when it put its first responders through several possible emergency scenarios at Saxe Middle School to be prepared for an event they hope never happens.
