What's On Your Mind, New Canaan?

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – The hot weather, what do to in the summer and recycling were some of the things on the minds of people in New Canaan when we spoke with them Thursday afternoon.

Joe Mocerrino, 58, who works at the Colonial Barber Shop on South Avenue, was thinking that Thursday’s weather wasn’t so bad. He couldn’t imagine anyone not outside on the sunny afternoon. “I’m enjoying the day,” said Mocerrino, who lives in Stratford. “It’s not humid.”

If it was too hot, Alicia LiCalzi, 20, was planning to escape. “I’m going to diving practice,” said LiCalzi. She is home from the College of the Holy Cross though her practice was in Purchase, N.Y.

Deda Sandor, co-owner of Caroline’s Creperie, said she was thinking about having a fun summer with her children now that schools are out. Travel is in the cards, including a trip to their grandmother’s home and to the mountains. “We’ll go over the summer,” she said.

Tim Orr, 50, a volunteer New Canaan firefighter, said he would normally be thinking about the economy and upcoming elections. But Thursday’s warm weather had him focused on his garden and whether his plants would get enough water — his home is served by well water. “I’m worried about the heat and the possibility of drought,” he said. “During lunch, I think about the garden.”

Karen-Nicole Leming, who lives on Paradise Island in the Bahamas, was wondering why more people don’t recycle. Leming said she brought her recyclable materials from their home to the United States for recycling because there’s no recycling program in her new home. “Why aren’t people recycling? It’s so easy. So many people don’t do it.”
