What's On Your Mind, New Canaan?

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Perfecting a dance, the fate of trees on Forest Street and preparing for an extremely long distance move were some of the things on the minds of people in New Canaan when we spoke to them Thursday afternoon.

Sondra Banford was wondering why two trees on Forest Street are set to be cut down. Banford and her daughters Alexondra, 7, and Jacquelyn, 10, fretted about the possibilities of fewer trees, especially because they loved the animated movie “The Lorax,” which was about trees. “Forest Street won’t be much of a forest without trees,” Banford said. She will likely call Town Tree Warden Bruce Pauley to get an explanation.

Lucy Martin, 13, was thinking about taking the right steps in dance class. She took a little time to practice her moves outside her dance school on Forest Street. “New Canaan Dance Academy is the best in the world,” Lucy said with a smile.

Joe Henegan, 34, of Fairfield, was thinking about gutters because he works for Connecticut Gutter and Exteriors. “People saw problems with their gutters, and they decided to seek help. It’s been a pretty busy day,” said Henegan. He stopped by a local shop for a turkey sandwich before heading back on the road to his next job.

Alex Lowe, 22, who works for SJX Partners on Locust Avenue, was thinking about how much work she had left to do Thursday afternoon. She would have preferred staying outdoors to enjoy the summer-like day. “It’s so nice out. I’d like to be able to walk around,” said Lowe, who lives in New York City. She did enjoy a serving of ice cream.

Katie Downes-Angus, 25, had her mind occupied with her pending move to Tanzania — she’s joining the Peace Corps. “I’ve been collecting stuff for two weeks,” she said. “I’ve been working on it. I’ve mostly been looking at my stuff.” Downes-Angus figures her laptop computer will be the toughest thing to lug around as she travels the African nation.
