Ticket Sales Begin for New Canaan's Family Fourth

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Summer is almost here, and New Canaan residents are set to take part in the annual Family Fourth celebration at Waveny Park.

Thousands of New Canaan and Fairfield County residents are expected to be at the big party on July 4, which is a combination of a picnic, carnival and fireworks show. Passes for the 32nd edition of the show are now on sale at the town’s website or at the recreation department office at Waveny Park.

Town Administrator Tom Stadler, in his first year as the event’s chairman, said he’s expecting the town’s old-fashioned family picnic to be well attended again.

For the second consecutive year, visitors will get to purchase food at the event, courtesy of Garelick & Herbs. Visitors can still bring their own food and beverages if they wish, but Stadler said he wants visitors to know that they have a choice. “After 30 something years, it’s getting the word out. We have food now. You don’t have to bring your own,” he said. “Most everything is the same.”

Familiar features will include children’s inflatable bounce houses, music from the New Canaan Town Band and magic from The Great Sirico.

With July 4 falling on a Wednesday, Stadler said some residents have asked why it could not be held closer to a weekend. “We’re real traditionalists. It’s always on the Fourth,” he said.

Stadler encouraged residents to purchase their Family Fourth passes online at the town’s website in advance of the festivities. Tickets are $30 per car for town residents and $60 for nonresidents.  Families can also buy passes outside New Canaan Town Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 30.

In case of rain, the event will be held July 5. Residents are asked not to bring dogs, barbecue grills, personal fireworks, sparklers or candles.
