NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- The New Canaan Library will host a reception for artist Randi Bull on Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m at the Curtis Gallery to celebrate her new exhibit.

Bull’s distinctive art stems from her unusual technique and resourcefulness — she prints only by hand without the help of a mechanical press. She uses tools in the form of knives and gouges, and creates most of her work through a woodblock medium, reconfiguring blocks and creating “multiple images in an infinite variety within an edition,” according to The New Canaan Library’s site.

Her love of wood as an artistic medium comes from a childhood spent visiting family surrounded by acres of trees in her native Norwalk.

“It is the feel of cutting the wood, the white of the paper, the wonderful colors, and the luminosity that the white paper and the black key block produce," Bull states on the New Canaan Library site. "I like the shapes that materialize when you cut freely, both the shape that you cut out and the shape that remains.”

"Paintings & Prints by Randi Bull" is sponsored by the Friends of the Library and runs through Sept. 15. The curator of this exhibit is Laura Einstein.
