H. Clifford Parris III, 80, New Canaan Publisher

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – H. Clifford Parris III died April 7 at his home in New Canaan from pancreatic cancer. He was 80.

A 46-year resident of New Canaan, Parris was a member of the Congregational Church, New Canaan Historical Society, New Canaan Senior Men's Club and Groton Long Point Yacht Club.

He was born Feb. 3, 1932 in Philadelphia, Penn., the oldest of four children born to H. Clifford Parris and Eleanor Stein Parris. He received a bachelor’s of science degree in 1954. Parris joined the US Navy, going to Pensacola, Fla., to enter the Air Cadet School. 

After receiving an honorable discharge in 1956, he came back to Connecticut to marry Prudence L. Murphy. Parris then enrolled in the business school at Temple University, receiving a master's degree in 1958. He worked at Ford Motor Company and Chrysler Corporation before joining Motor Age Magazine in advertising sales. 

In 1965, Parris was asked to joined Road & Track Magazine and manage advertising sales on the east coast. An auto enthusiast, he became advertising director and went on to create and publish Road & Track Specials and Exotic Cars Quarterly. Through the years, he drove on 17 national and international racetracks. Parris retired as vice president of CBS Publications.  

He continued his associations with auto enthusiasts as a judge at Concours d'Elegance of Greenwich, Fairfield County, Bethlehem, Penn. and Hilton Head Island, N.C., as well as for the Ferrari Show and the Classic Car Club of America. He was a longtime member of the Madison Avenue Sports Car Driving and Chowder Society, the International Motor Press Association and Auto Enthusiasts. 

Parris is survived by his wife, Prudence; two daughters, Pamela (Michael) Crandall and Gail (Vincent) Latone; two sons, H. Clifford (Virginia) Parris IV and Theodore (Wendy) Parris and four grandchildren. 

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on April 28 at the Congregational Church in New Canaan.
