ArtScapades will explain how the movement arrived in America, including the influence of art dealers, the education of American artists in Europe, and the formation of art colonies. This session chronicles the lives of William Merritt Chase, Childe Hassam, Theodore Robinson, John Twachtman and J. Alden Weir.
The series of talks concludes on Monday, June 16, with "Post-Impressionism: From Objective to Subjective" in which ArtScapades details how art moved past Impressionism, the influence of a single art critic, and how stylistic disagreements and personal animosities eventually brought down the Impressionist movement. ArtScapades will explore the lives and works of Paul Cézanne, Georges Seurat, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
Presenters Robin Hoffman and Jodi Stiffelman began ArtScapades in 2009 after teaching art appreciation for 10 years in the New Canaan public school system. This is their fifth series of lectures at the New Canaan Library.
