New Canaan Nature Center Hosts Fall Fair Saturday

NEW CANAAN, Conn.  – Interested in eating pie quickly, running through a maze of hay, or taking a haunted walk? The New Canaan Nature Center should be your destination this weekend.

Thousands of New Canaan and Fairfield County residents are expected to visit the nature center on Saturday for the 43rd annual Fall Fair.

Nature Center Marketing Director Hilary Wittmann said the facility's campus is almost ready for the big fair - one of the most highly anticipated events on the center’s calendar, and one of its biggest fundraisers.

There will be plenty for everyone to do, Wittmann said, including a chance to run through a hay maze, ride a zip line, take a pony ride, and hear live music from Remember September.

There's also the ever-popular pie-eating contest, now in its fifth year. A few competitors have signed up in advance, Wittman said, though most decide to give it a go on the day of the fair, gobbling up as much pie as they can without using their hands. While Wittmann has never taken part, other Nature Center employees have given it a shot.

“I’m not sure why people do it,” she said. “It’s silly and fun. A huge crowd watches.”

Since so many people have other activities to do on Saturdays, the fall fair will remain open until 5 p.m. Nature Center members will be admitted early.
