Author Lectures About New Canaan's Silvermine Artist

NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- Prominent West Coast academic and author Bram Dijkstra will lecture on early Silvermine artist Charles Reiffel on Saturday at the New Canaan Historical Society from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Dijkstra's presentation, “Charles Reiffel: the Fate of a Silvermine Painter Who Chose Art over Fame,” will focus on the artist’s residency in New Canaan from 1912 to 1925. Some of the prominent works he produced during that time include "Sier Hill" (1916), "The Wilton Woods" (1920) and "Autumn Design" (1922).

During his time, Reiffel became the the first president of The Silvermine Guild and a founder of the Wilton Group of Artists.

Dijkstra is professor emeritus at the University California San Diego. He has written extensively on art and curates exhibitions for the San Diego Museum, where Charles Reiffel’s work is part of the permanent collection.
