The bodies of Wafae El Arar, Imane Mallah, and Kaoutar Naqqad — all lifelong friends from Revere — were discovered on Feb. 22. The trio had traveled to Central America to celebrate El Arar’s 26th birthday, their families said.
Initial reports from officials indicated that the women died of acute pulmonary edema, a condition caused by fluid buildup in the lungs. However, further testing was required to determine the underlying cause.
Investigators later determined the pulmonary edema was caused by carbon monoxide poisoning. The gas is colorless and odorless, making it difficult to detect. The women likely didn’t realize they were being poisoned until it was too late.
Johns Hopkins University said carbon monoxide builds up in the air as fuel is burned, including wood, gasoline, coal, natural gas, and kerosene. Common causes include malfunctioning appliances.
It's unclear what caused it in this case, however.
Although THC gummies were discovered in the women’s hotel room, toxicology reports found no THC or other illicit substances in their bloodstreams, CBS reported.
The families released a statement following the official findings.
We have said since the beginning of this investigation that their deaths were suspicious and raised concerns about initial reports in the news media. While today's official finding puts to rest those initial reports, we hope this will give authorities in law enforcement pause before they make similar suggestions during future investigations. Survivors such as our families deserve their best, honest work. We received it today but needed it throughout this investigative process.
The families also thanked the Revere community for its support following the tragic loss.
Revere Mayor Patrick M. Keefe Jr. issued a statement Wednesday, saying he was relieved the families had finally received answers.
"These young women were valued members of our community, and while the gravity of this tragedy weighs heavily on us all, I am grateful for the diligence of our state and federal partners in ensuring that a proper investigation was conducted and brought the truth to light," he said.
