The report, published in U.S. News, used more than 70 metrics to measure where exactly each state falls in categories like healthcare, education, economy, crime, environment, infrastructure and more.

Connecticut moved up three spots to No. 21 in this year’s list of the best states, putting it fourth among New England states.

Perhaps the most surprising ranking is the state’s No. 1 position in the subcategory of top company headquarters. This means that Connecticut has more Fortune 1000 companies per capita than any other state.

Here’s how Connecticut ranks in some of the other categories:

  • Health Care: No. 3
  • Education: No. 12
  • Economy: No. 30
  • Infrastructure: No. 46
  • Opportunity: No. 33
  • Fiscal Stability: No. 46
  • Crime and Corrections: No. 7
  • Natural Environment: No. 6

The state’s high rankings in certain categories are offset by lower rankings in categories like infrastructure and stability, the Hartford Business Journal notes.

“If we want to improve -- if we want to grow jobs, grow our economy, and get our state on a path of success -- we need to fix our transportation system and create more stability in our finances,” said Gov. Ned Lamont in a statement. “This should be a wake-up call to every elected official -- this data is staring us in the face. Let’s do something about it now – we were elected to take action.”
