Officers from the New Canaan Police Department responded to a reported crash in the area of Oenone Ridge Road near Lukes Wood Road shortly before 1 a.m. on Dec. 30, 2021 after a driver struck a guard rail and then crashed into a nearby tree.

According to police, the driver was identified as New Canaan resident Douglas Ray Knight, age 64, who was the only occupant of the vehicle.

While speaking with Knight, investigators said that officers detected the smell of alcohol on his breath and his speech was slurred. He was subsequently transported to the Norwalk Hospital by paramedics due to the nature of the crash.

The investigation into the crash led to a warrant being issued for Knight’s arrest, and he turned himself in at New Canaan Police Headquarters on Monday, March 7.

Knight was charged with illegal operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and cited for failing to drive in the right lane. He was released after being processed and scheduled to make a court appearance on Thursday, March 17.
