Stephen O’Loughlin, age 49, a 1994 graduate of UConn, and his son, Pierce O’Loughlin were found dead last week during a welfare check of their California home when the latter didn’t show up for school, according to the San Fransisco Chronicle.

The bodies were reportedly found on Wednesday, Jan. 13 by police with gunshot wounds inside his San Fransisco apartment. The welfare check was performed at the request of the boy’s mother.

On his LinkedIn page, it states O'Loughlin served as regional vice president at LoCorr Funds, an investment management company headquartered in Minnesota.

According to reports, O’Loughlin and the boy’s mother, Leslie Hu, had been involved in a contentious custody battle that centered around the former’s opposition to vaccinating their son.

Hu had been seeking sole custody at the time of the murder-suicide and had a trial scheduled to begin the day before the killings that was postponed until March.

It is alleged that O’Loughlin had agreed to begin vaccinating their son on the day before the bodies were located. O’Loughlin reportedly suffered from “untreated mental illness” and was against vaccinations, both of which may have played a part in the murder-suicide.

In court filings, Hu reportedly claimed that from 2012 to 2016, O'Loughlin paid thousands to a “self-help group” for individual therapy sessions. Court papers allege that he took those steps after determining the "government was out to get us and was trying to mind-control us.”

"I think it is undeniable that Pierce's father suffered from untreated mental illness, which resulted in his taking the life of his son and his own life," an attorney for Hu reportedly said. "I believe that he did this horrid act in order to exercise the ultimate control over Lesley.”
