The crash happened on Friday, Feb. 24 around 1 a.m. on Route 9 southbound in the area of Exit 23 when a Honda Accord struck the rear of a Connecticut Department of Transportation plow truck, according to state police.
After troopers arrived at the scene, the driver of the plow truck told them that he had been treating the roadway when the Honda hit him. Two of the car's passengers then ran away from the scene while the driver stayed.
The two passengers were then found uninjured a short distance away by authorities and brought back to the scene.
Following this, troopers noticed that the driver, identified as 19-year-old Nicholas Jutras of Berlin, was showing signs of impairment and smelled an odor of alcohol coming from him. They then administered a sobriety test, which he failed.
Jutras, who was also not injured in the crash, was then taken into custody and charged with the following:
- Operating under the influence under age 21;
- Following too close resulting in a motor vehicle accident.
He was later released on a $1,500.00 bond and will be arraigned in New Britain Superior Court on Thursday, March 9.
The two passengers of the Honda who fled after the crash were not charged, according to state police.
