Jon Zames, an associate head coach and coordinator for the Staples High School varsity football team in Westport, has been placed on paid leave since Friday, Nov. 8, when an issue was presented to the school’s administration, officials said. No other information has been released by the school district.

Zames spent part of the year on the sidelines as the head coach of Staples’ football team while head coach Adam Behrends dealt with a family concern. Behrends was the third coach in as many years for the high school.

According to the Staples Wreckers football website, for the past decade, Zames has privately trained high level high school, college and professional athletes. In addition to training the Staples Football team, he is responsible for training the Staples lacrosse and baseball teams.

Prior to becoming a coach, Zames had a career in finance. He graduated from Columbia and from the Harvard Business School. Zames lives in Westport and is on the PAL Football and Lacrosse Boards and coaches football, lacrosse and basketball.

The cause of Zames’ paid leave remains a mystery.
