In November, the Stamford School District announced it would be indefinitely closing Westover Magnet Elementary School following an inspection and air quality tests that discovered that the building was infested by mold.

The district was hopeful of reopening in September, on time for the 2019-2020 academic year, but determined that timetable was “too aggressive.” The Mold Task Force, which includes representatives from the city and school district, announced on Thursday that students will remain at their temporary 1 Elmcroft Road location after renewing their lease.

“The extent of the water intrusion issues at 412 Stillwater Ave. are proving as complicated as we suspected when we determined that students and faculty required relocation back in November,” Mold Task Force Director of Administration and member Michael Handler said.  “The data and information received to date does not suggest that it is necessary to abandon the existing site, however, the experts working on the project agree that a renovation of the existing building is the appropriate course of action.”

The Mold Task Force will be holding a public meeting at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 6 in the third-floor auditorium at Westover Magnet School at 1 Elmcroft to “outline, in detail, our progress and strategy for the Stillwater property.”
