Greenwich Schools Work To Mitigate Changes In Later Start Times

GREENWICH, Conn. -- The Greenwich Board of Education’s School Start Time Ad Hoc Committee is working with school officials and school bus consultants to help mitigate changes in the start times at the town’s high school and middle schools.

Greenwich school officials are working with parents to help them cope with new start times in the fall at the high school and middle schools.

In a new plan that was approved in September, high school students would start their day at 8:30 a.m. That is 60 minutes than the current start time. The school day would end at 3:15.

The middle school will also have new start and dismissal times. Those students will begin their school day at 8 a.m., 15 minutes later than the current start time, and end at 2:50 p.m. There are no changes for preschool and elementary schools.

To help parents cope with the changes, the administration notified families of a survey it is conducting to understand changing child care needs as a result of the new start times.

The school will also release bus schedules around July 1, a full month earlier than the usual release of start times.

School bus transportation to the Greenwich Boys and Girls Club next year will be provided by its contractor, Student Transportation of America (STA). That will allow Boys and Girls Club staff to remain at the facility to greet elementary students arriving before Greenwich High School students are able to arrive to assist with the after school program.

High school students will be released two hours early on planned (school calendar) and unplanned (i.e., weather) closings. Lunch will be served on two-hour early release days.

The high school athletic programs may require adjustments to start times. Public transportation bus passes will be available at discounted rates at Greenwich High School beginning April 1. Visit the school store in Student Activities for more information and/or to purchase a CT Transit Bus Pass.
