Babington will be the first layperson and female to be appointed interim president of Fairfield University. She'll step into the role on Jan. 1, and the appointment lasts until June 2017.

"Since her arrival at Fairfield University, Lynn has been instrumental both in her role as provost and senior vice president, but also in her continued quest for innovation and transformation," said Frank Carroll III, a 1989 graduate and chairman of the Board of Trustees.

"I, along with the Board of Trustees, have the utmost confidence in Lynn and her ability to lead the university at this critically important time."

"I am honored to serve as interim president of this great Institution," Babington said. "Since my arrival in 2012, I knew Fairfield was on the brink of something great, and it makes me proud to be assuming this role at this time of accelerated growth and transformation at our university.

She has served in her current roles since 2014. Prior to becoming a senior VP, she was dean of the School of Nursing for two years. She also holds an appointment as a professor of Nursing.

The university noted Babington's extensive experience in academic, hospital and clinical settings. Prior to joining Fairfield University, she was an associate professor, assistant dean of graduate programs and director of the Doctorate of Nursing Practice program at Northeastern University's School of Nursing.

Her honors and distinctions include the Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellowship, a Fulbright Scholarship, and multiple awards for excellence in teaching and the use of technology. The university added that she's widely respected and called upon for her expertise as a nursing educator and academic leader.

Babington got her undergraduate nursing degree from the University of Michigan, and a master's and doctorate from the University of Washington.
