The incident began 9 p.m., Sunday, July 21, when Stamford Police Officer Kara Hames was patrolling the city’s east-side when she spotted an illegally parked vehicle on Shippan Avenue, which also appeared to have an illegal tint on the vehicle’s windows.

As Officer Hames approached the vehicle, it sped off, the Stamford Police said.

She was able to catch up to the vehicle on Williams Street, where it stopped. As Hames approached the car, she immediately was able to smell the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, police said.

The driver admitted to having smoked some marijuana. A passenger of the car, Malcolm Germeil-Clerveau, 23, Stamford, CT, was found to be in possession of a handgun and a large amount of marijuana, police said.

He was arrested and charged with carrying a gun without a permit, weapon in a motor vehicle, possession of marijuana, and possession with intent to sell.

During the stop, police seized a .45 caliber High-Point handgun with a round in the chamber, six rounds of ammunition and approximately 30 grams of marijuana.

Germeil-Clerveau is being held on a $75,000.00 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on August 5.

"We are extremely proud of the actions of Officer Hames," the department said. "By paying attention to such matters as parking violations and equipment violations she was able to take a gun off the streets of Stamford."
