The Bridgeport Police Department received reports of shots fired on Union Avenue shortly before 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24, Police Capt. Brian Fitzgerald said.

Upon arrival at the Bridgeport home, officers were met by family members who were in the process of transporting a man - later identified as Raymond Sierra - to Bridgeport Hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to his chest.

Officers assisted in transporting Sierra to the hospital, Fitzgerald said, where he was treated for the wound at the hospital, but was pronounced dead. It is the second homicide in 24 hours in Bridgeport.

Detectives are processing the crime scene on Union Avenue and are working to identify the suspect responsible for the shooting.

Earlier in the day, officers also responded to a shooting near the intersection of Fox Street and Canfield Avenue. The two fatal shootings mark the 15th and 16th homicides in Bridgeport this year.

The shootings are not believed to be related.
