An area man was arrested after allegedly hitting a pedestrian while driving drunk causing serious injuries.

Police learned of the incident around 4 p.m., Wednesday, March 20 after the Naugatuck Police Department received numerous calls reporting a vehicle versus pedestrian collision in the parking lot of the Meineke Car Care Center, located at 144 Rubber Avenue, police said.

Officers and first responders determined the pedestrian had sustained serious injuries and he was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital for treatment, department officials said.

Officers at the scene developed evidence that the accused driver, Domingos Teixeira, 53, of Naugatuck, was suspected to be under the influence and was arrested.

He was charged with assault with a motor vehicle while intoxicated, DUI, reckless driving, and drinking alcohol while driving.

Teixeira was held on a $100,000 bond pending his appearance at Waterbury Court on Thursday, March 21.

Based upon the severity of the collision the Naugatuck Valley Collision Investigation (NVCIT) consisting of officers from the towns of Cheshire, Middlebury, Naugatuck, Plymouth, Watertown, and Wolcott were activated and assumed the investigation and processing of the scene.

The investigation remains active at this time.
