The Greenwich Police Narcotics Section was alerted to a potential prescription fraud case by a local pharmacy on Monday, March 25 around 11 a.m.
The pharmacy told officers that the suspect, later identified as Derek Monick of Yarmouth, Massachusetts, had allegedly tried to fill a prescription for 240 Oxycodone 30mg through fraudulent means.
When Monick tried to pick up the prescription on Wednesday, March 27, police detained him. Monick claimed that he was at the pharmacy to pick up a prescription that he knew to be fraudulent.
Monick was arrested, and a search of his vehicle led to the discovery of 1.2 grams of Fentanyl/heroin, two metal spoons, a syringe and $1,471 in cash, which was seized as part of the investigation.
Monick was charged with the following:
- Possession of narcotics
- Criminal attempt at possession of narcotics
- Possession of drug paraphernalia
- Criminal attempt at obtaining a controlled drug by fraud
- Criminal impersonation
Monick was released after posting a surety bond of $5,000. He is scheduled to appear in Stamford Superior Court on Wednesday, April 10.
