The New York State Thruway Authority announced that beginning Monday, April 15, the ramp from Midland Avenue to I-95 northbound in Rye will be closed to all traffic during the duration of the project, which is scheduled to be completed in 2021.
The closure comes as part of the “Last Mile” project, which is focusing on the one-mile stretch from Exit 22 (Port Chester/Rye/Midland Avenue) to the Connecticut state line.
According to the Thruway Authority, the ramp is being realigned to connect directly to the northbound I-95 lanes. The ramp currently converges with I-287 with a stop sign. Traffic then continues down the ramp to merge with I-95.
The new alignment will remove the stop sign and allow traffic to flow directly from Midland Avenue, onto the ramp and onto the Thruway.
While the ramp is closed, motorists seeking to access I-95 northbound will have to travel north on Midland Avenue; make a right on the ramp for I-287 westbound; continue on to I-287 westbound and exit at Exit 9 (Kenilworth Road) before getting back onto I-287 eastbound and onward to I-95 north.
Detour information is expected to be posted and displayed on signage and broadcast on Variable Message Signs and Highway Advisory Radio.
“This long-anticipated project to upgrade the ‘Last Mile’ is finally coming to fruition,” Thruway Authority Acting Executive Director Matthew Driscoll said when announcing the beginning of the project last year. “This comprehensive project will benefit the thousands of motorists who travel this stretch of I-95 every day and improve the quality of life for residents who live nearby, bringing the roadway to modern standards and increasing safety.”
