A convicted felon from Fairfield County is facing life in prison after admitting to a federal gun charge after being busted with the illegal weapon, cocaine and marijuana.

Danbury resident Fernando “Sosa” Rodriguez, 28, has pleaded guilty in district court in Bridgeport to one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, U.S. Attorney John Durham announced.

On Sept. 12 last year, the Stamford Police Department set up a string operation after receiving information that he was to conduct a drug deal on Wardwell Street. When Rodriguez arrived, he was busted with the drugs.

A search of a backpack Rodriguez was holding at the time of his arrest had approximately 58 grams of cocaine and 116 grams of marijuana. A police K-9 search of the vehicle led investigators to a secret storage compartment, that contained an additional 100 grams of cocaine, a Ruger 9mm handgun and a loaded 9mm magazine.

Investigators noted that Rodriguez was a convicted felon with a previous weapons charge in Danbury.

Rodriguez, 28, has been detained since his federal arrest on Jan. 10. He is scheduled to be sentenced on June 7, when he will face a mandatory minimum term of five years and a maximum term of life in prison.
