“We are delighted to partner with the Boys & Girls Club once again this year to help the children kick off a fun and festive holiday season,” said Sue Moretti Rogers, president of the League of Greenwich.
Under the leadership of Junior League of Greenwich members Maryann Ghirardelli and Natalie Stein, who have coordinated this event for the past three years, 10 volunteer candy elves helped children select their cookie toppings from nearly 20 choices from a seemingly endless confectionary buffet.
Cheery holiday music played in the background as the children worked to bring their gingerbread creations to life.
Bobby Walker Jr., CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich, was on hand to get the party started.
“Just look at the kids’ faces -- you can never underestimate what the holiday season means to kids," said Walker. "This is a big kickoff event where the kids actually get to make something and bring it home. The best part is it’s a community event. We love to collaborate with the Junior League, and our partnership just keeps getting stronger because of events like this."
“About 80 kids will come through here today and each will leave here with a great-looking, candy-laden cookie that they have decorated all on their own,” said Ghirardelli, as the children lined up to select their cookie toppings.
“The variety of candies, confections, and icing colors really allow the kids to get creative. I have seen some very talented cookie artists here today,” said Stein.
Red licorice, rainbow sprinkles, fruity candies, mini-marshmallows, cranberries, raisins, chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, red sugar, green sugar, shredded coconut and more tempted the cookie artists -- and very likely not all of the candy actually made it onto a cookie.
