For those interested in what it takes to be a police officer, or to just learn more about your local department, the Greenwich Police Department is hosting its Spring 2018 Citizen's Police Academy.

The six-week program begins April 16 and meets twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the police department. One Saturday class will also be held on May 5 from 9 a.m. to noon.

The academy provides residents with a first-hand overview of both the law enforcement and community-related functions of the department.

Some of the topics covered include:

  • Introduction to Policing
  • Use of Force
  • Marine Patrol
  • Motor Vehicle Stops
  • Patrol Operations
  • Crime Scenes
  • Narcotics Investigations
  • Scams/Frauds
  • And many more

Instructors for the program are experienced Greenwich police officers. In addition to taking part in role-playing exercises, attendees will accompany on-duty officers in the marine and patrol division. Ride-alongs are scheduled beyond regular class times. A demonstration at the firing range will allow attendees to participate in mock scenarios where an officer may or may not have to fire their weapon.

Applicants must be Greenwich residents on town employees and at least 18 years old. The program is free, however, the department asks that those applying be committed to attending the full six-week program. Class size is limited to 40 people. Due to the high demand for the class, applicants will be subject to a lottery drawing to determine the final class roster. A criminal background check will be performed on all applicants.

To apply, pick up an application at the department's front desk or visit the website at .
