Kabala will play a varied program of works by Haydn, Beethoven, Chopin, Schumann, Ives and Ravel. The two featured works will be Beethoven’s Sonata in F minor, Op. 57, “Appassionata” and Maurice Ravel's “Gaspard de la Nuit.” The “Appassionata” is one of Beethoven’s most violent and passionate works and it has been said that he loved it above all others.
Ravel's “Gaspard de la Nuit” ranks as one of the most highly original, imaginative, evocative and technically difficult works in the entire piano repertory. Its composer made no bones about this surreal, hallucinatory music, describing it as “three romantic poems of transcendental virtuosity” in which he deliberately set out to surpass even Balakirev’s notorious “Islamey” in terms of technical difficulty.
A reception will follow “A Musical Feast.”
Kabala has been active as a performer, teacher and lecturer throughout the U.S. as well as Mexico, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Austria and Germany. He holds a master’s degree in musicl from the Peabody Conservatory of Music where he was a student of Konrad Wolff and Leon Fleisher.
