FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield Prep senior Mark Giannini was named a Gates Millennium Scholar for 2013.
The Gates Millennium Scholarship Program is a nationwide scholarship endowed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and administered by the United Negro College Fund. The program is designed “to promote academic excellence by providing thousands of outstanding students, who have significant financial need, the opportunity to reach their full potential,” the foundation says on its website.
Nationwide, 1,000 students earn Gates Millennium Scholarships each year, out of more than 54,000 applicants. Giannini is one of only four students in Connecticut to earn the recognition this year, and the only Fairfield County resident.
Giannini, a Monroe resident, is finishing his senior year at Prep with a 3.8 grade point average. He has participated in Fairfield Prep’s Kairos retreat program, the Campus Ministry Student Board, the Debate Society, the Political Awareness Club and the SEED program (Students for Educational Excellence through Diversity).
He has also done volunteer work as a Peer Tutor, as a member of the Cardinal Key Society and as a participant in the Urban Plunge program. He also traveled to El Salvador with Prep’s service mission trip.
Giannini plans to attend Notre Dame University next fall, majoring in applied mathematics and chemistry.
