Fabio Martinez-Rodriguez, age 51, of Stamford, was arrested around 3:15 a.m., Monday, Oct. 18, by police following a reported break-in at a variety store in downtown Stamford.

That's when officers responded to a break-in at Parkview Variety, 233 Main St., according to Captain Richard Conklin, of the Stamford Police.

Officers were alerted to the break-in by dispatch after asking to be notified of any break-ins in the area in an effort to catch the elusive business bandit, Conklin said.

"The midnight crew looked at catching the person responsible as a challenge after chasing them for more than a month," Conklin said.

After receiving the call, officers flooded the area and found the business window had been smashed with a rock and money had been stolen from the cash register.

Luckily, Conklin said, the owners of the business lived close by and were able to provide surveillance video to the officers of the offender.

Within minutes, Martinez-Rodriguez was located about a block away with the $237 in cash from the register in his pocket.  He had cuts on his hands from breaking the window.

Following his arrest, during an interview with detectives, Conklin said Martinez-Rodriguez admitted to six prior burglaries.

He was charged with:

  • Burglary
  • Larceny
  • Criminal mischief

He is being held on a $100,000 bond and is set to return to court next month.

"An all-around great job by patrol, the midnight crew, and dispatch to catch this suspect," Conklin said.
