Rabid Skunk, ATV Crash Into Mailbox Among North Castle Police Reports

ARMONK, N.Y. – A skunk’s strange behavior prompted a worried homeowner in to call in the cavalry Monday, North Castle police say.

North Castle police this week investigated a report of a possibly rabid skunk on Spruce Hill Road and another about an ATV driver who had crashed into a mailbox on Cedar Hill Road.

The apparently ailing, and possibly rabid, animal was “rolling around and falling over” on private property on Spruce Hill Road for several hours.

Officers told the homeowner that a trapper would have to be called in because of where the skunk was located.

On Wednesday, police and emergency crews were dispatched to Cedar Hill Road after an ATV crashed into a mailbox.

The male driver was lying on the ground, breathing heavily, and appeared to be “out of it,” police said they were told.

First responders from the Armonk Fire Department Ambulance Corps., Banksville Fire Department, and ALS, also came to the unidentified victim’s aid.

The ATV driver was conscious when he was taken to Westchester Medical Center to be checked out, police said.

On Sunday, police investigated a report of a coyote being hit by a car on Route 120 around 7:45 p.m.

The injured animal turned out to be a deer.

The officer put the deer out of its misery and the state Department of Transportation was notified to come pick up its body.

On Saturday, around 7 a.m., police investigated a car accident on Route 22.

No one was injured in the crash, but the car started to burn and firefighters had to be called in to put out the flames, police said.

The driver refused medical attention and the road was re-opened after the scene was cleared, police said.
