FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield Police Department is warning residents of a phone scam involving utility bills after a local store reported being called twice.

Spic and Span Market in Southport told police that they were contacted Tuesday by an "S. Martinez" claiming to be from from United Illuminating and saying the store was delinquent in its bill and that the power would be turned off within the hour. A similar call had been received last week as well.

Police called the number from which the call had been placed, 203-992-9789, but it had been disconnected.

The Microsoft store and Galaxy Fitness received similar calls, police said.

Fairfield Police Sgt. Sue Lussier said that the department had notified senior residents.
