For the second time, Stamford resident Joaquin Veras - who has a previous conviction for drug trafficking - pleaded guilty to distributing heroin in Connecticut.

Specifically, Veras, 46, pleaded to one count of possession with intent to distribute, and distribution of, one kilogram or more of heroin. He previously was sentenced in August 2011 to 57 months in prison for conspiring to distribute 100 grams or more of heroin.

U.S. Attorney John Durham said that in March and May last year, investigators made a pair of controlled purchases of approximately 100 grams of heroin from Veras.

Investigators then arranged to purchase a kilogram of heroin from Veras for $58,000.

Veras was arrested on May 16 last year in possession of one kilogram of heroin. A search of his apartment led to the seizure of another kilogram of heroin, cocaine, items used to package drugs, and $7,000 cash. He’s been detained since his arrest.

When he is sentenced on Wednesday, Dec. 23, Veras will face a maximum term of life in prison.
